Fort Douglas Closes as University of Utah and Army Reserve Complete Historic Land Handover
After more than a century as neighbors, the University of Utah and the U.S. Army Reserve have finalized a land transfer decades in the making — shifting over 1,500 acres of federal land near Salt Lake City into university use for teaching, research, and healthcare space.
The handover coincides with the opening of a new $127 million, 227,000-square-foot Army Reserve headquarters at Camp Williams in Bluffdale, about 30 miles southwest of the old site. Army Reserve units completed their move to the new facility on June 19, closing out Fort Douglas’s 160-plus year run as an active military post.
Fort Douglas was originally established in 1862, covering roughly 10,500 acres in the foothills above Salt Lake City. Over the past 126 years, land from the fort has gradually transferred to the university, forming the basis for university buildings, the Natural History Museum of Utah, Red Butte Garden, Research Park, and U of U Health’s hospital and clinic facilities. This latest transfer — of the fort’s final 50 acres — closes out that process entirely.
Funding the new Bluffdale facility required coordinated action from the Utah State Legislature, the Governor’s Office, and Congress. University president Taylor Randall described the agreement as continuing Fort Douglas’s long history of service, while Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called it one of the region’s most significant military modernization efforts. Because the fort site sits on the National Register of Historic Places, future development will be guided by federal preservation law and overseen by the Utah Office of Historic Preservation.
This one’s a genuinely notable piece of regional history wrapping up — a 160-year military presence quietly closing so a university can inherit prime real estate for research and healthcare expansion. Worth watching for what the University of Utah eventually builds on the final 50 acres, given the historic preservation constraints attached to the site.
